Why Should I Vote for You?

Dear friend and neighbor, I wish it were possible for me to sit down and enjoy a nice, relaxing, steaming, hot cup of coffee with each and every one of you while answering this question. But even though, in a practical sense, that may not be possible, here is what I would tell you if we were meeting together, face to face as to why you should vote for me as your next state representative. So, maybe grab yourself a cup of coffee to enjoy while you sit and read through my reasons.

I have a long history of accomplishments since I moved to Santa Rosa County with my wife, Teresa, in 1985. I’ve started and run 2 successful businesses, Envirotec Service Specialists, launched in 1991, and sold in 2000, and Father and Son Pest and Lawn Solutions fatherandsonlandscape.com, started in 2003 and still operating, employing 50 people and serving a 4-county area.

Teresa and I planted Covenant Community Church of Navarre navarrechurch.com in 2001, and pastored it for seven years until 2008.

In 2020, I founded a non profit organization, Set Free Refuge setfreerefuge.org that provides mental health therapy at no or reduced cost for women who are victims of sexual trauma and housing for survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking.

Would you like someone as your representative who has a history of taking on difficult projects like building businesses, churches and non profit organizations from scratch, putting in the hard work and making them successful? Then I’m your guy.

Building and running organizations consisting of dozens of people requires a high degree of leadership skill. You have to be able to hold a vision clearly in your mind, and then effectively communicate that vision to others in a way they understand it and are motivated to accomplish it with you. Because there is only so much I can do as one individual person, I must hire, train and coach managers, executive directors and employees to accomplish the goals I have set out to achieve. That takes leadership.

Building, running and managing multiple  organizations with many moving parts and dozens of people can only be done through wise and mature leadership. Do you want someone representing you who has a rock solid track record of working through other people to get things done? Then I’m your guy!

My wife Teresa and I were married in 1984. We raised 6 children and homeschooled all of them for a portion of their education.

Father and Son Pest and Lawn Solutions actually started out as a homeschool project. My oldest son, Buddy, was 13 at the time. He was very smart and had no problem comprehending information. However, his ADD made it difficult for him to sit and do school work. Some days I would come home from in the evening and he and Teresa were still working on the same piece of school work he had started that morning. They both were getting very frustrated!

I made the recommendation that Buddy and I start a father and son lawn maintenance business. We could use the business as a teaching platform and I would incorporate all his learning into our daily business activities. We all three agreed to try it and it worked wonderfully.

We listened to books on tape while riding around in the truck, we used the newspaper to learn about geography, politics and social studies and we used the business checkbook and accounting activities for math. In addition to the learning activities, Buddy also benefited from learning a good work ethic, something I have made a point to instill in all my children. When Buddy turned 18 he took his GED and passed in the top 3 percent.

Do you want someone representing you who has clearly demonstrated their family values over the last 37 years? Then I’m your guy.

They say that all good leaders know hardship in a very intimate way and I am no exception. In 1999, Teresa and I walked through the most difficult experience of our lives when we lost our seven year old son in a drowning accident. I don’t share this experience so you can feel sorry for or pity us. I share it to explain why we are now able to empathize with other people who go through extremely difficult situations.

Another season of hardship I experienced was when my business was struggling during and shortly after The Great Recession. We almost lost our property when we could not afford to pay our taxes for several years in a row. A sheriff’s deputy knocked on our door to serve us notice of the intent to auction off our property. My teenage daughter answered the door and was handed the notice. During that same period, there was a time when we were behind on our electric bill and Teresa called me in the middle of the day to say our electricity had been disconnected. We know what hardship feels like.

When you choose someone to represent you, do you want someone who knows what it’s like to experience hardship so they can truly empathize with you and advocate on your behalf in the legislature of our state? Then I’m your guy.

I have been blessed with a successful business that is managed day to day by highly competent people. I have put systems and procedures in place that allow the business to run smoothly with very little effort on my part. Therefore, my business requires a fraction of my time.

All my kids have grown, left the house and are on their own, and all doing very well.

Because of the way I’ve structured my business and the season of life I’m in, I can devote my full time and attention to fulfilling the responsibilities and demands of being your representative.

Do you want someone whose attention and concerns are completely focused on doing the work of a state representative without having to worry about what’s happening back at home or the office? Then I’m your guy.

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “Why did you choose to run”? It’s a very legitimate question, because the motivation behind a candidate’s choice to run for office will tell you a lot about what kind of a job they will do when elected.

want this position, I don’t need this position. There is a difference! The reason I want to be your representative is it provides me the opportunity to give back to this community that has given so much to me. In the 37 years I’ve lived here, this community has enabled me to build a successful business, raise 6 children, plant and pastor a church and open a non profit organization to serve women who have been sexually exploited and traumatized. Now it’s my time to give back to you.

If you want someone who is motivated by a sense of gratitude for all they have been given and wants to give back. Then I’m your guy.

I can proudly say I registered to vote as a Republican when I was 18 and the first president I ever voted for was Ronald Reagan. And have voted solid Republican ever since.

I’m a firm believer in Second Amendment rights. When I was 8 years old, my dad bought me my first Daisey BB gun after thorough instruction on gun safety. By the time I was 12, I had a collection of rifles, pistols and shotguns. In 8th grade English class, we were required to do a speech in front of the class and I chose to do mine on guns and even brought a few guns from my collection to school for the speech. (My how times have changed!)

I am and have always been staunchly pro-life. In the 1990s, when there was an abortion clinic in Ft. Walton, I was a regular participant in the pro-life demonstrations that took place at that clinic and attended countless pro-life rallies with Teresa and kids in tow.

Fortunately, when we were raising our kids, we didn’t have to deal with the government wanting to indoctrinate them on how to perceive history, or choose their gender. It has always been and should always be the responsibility of parents to shape the world view of their children and not the government.

Do you want someone who has firmly ingrained conservative values representing you? Then I’m your guy.

I welcome discussion! The more interaction we can have the better. Please feel free to contact me with your concerns and questions and I look forward to communicating with you!
